Balloons Utilized to Smuggle Tobacco Products Forced Closure of Lithuanian Airport
Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
