Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, aside from his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
