Resurgent Medvedev Wins First Title in Over Two Years
19 of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one championships have been earned on hard courts
A revitalized Daniil Medvedev won his maiden trophy for over two years with a win over Corentin Moutet in the competition final.
The Russian, a ex- top-ranked player, has had a difficult year, managing just one win at the big events and undergoing a meltdown at the US Open.
The player's unpredictability on the ATP Tour - and difficulties with his service game in specific - caused him falling of the world's top 10 and eventually separating with former trainer Gilles Cervara.
Presently working with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, he has consistently advanced in the recent weeks - climaxing in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over Frenchman Moutet.
It is the player's initial trophy since the 2023 Rome Masters and initial on a hardcourt from that period of 2023.
The win also indicates the Russian has won twenty-one victories at twenty-one different events.
"This marks the first occasion I am participating in a event with my two daughters at once, so to secure a title is really nice," commented world number 14 the champion.
"This title is in dedication of my child my daughter, because the maiden victory I achieved when my first daughter Alisa was born was for her."
The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had been defeated in his previous six title deciders, including in the German tournament in the past months.
His retrieving approach and regular emotional displays on the tennis court had caused some to doubt if his capacity to compete at the top level was finished.
However the athlete has made changes in the last few weeks, making an effort to advance forward and play assertively, supported by an improved serving game.
The champion came back from a disadvantage in the initial set against the tricky Moutet, securing four of the last five exchanges to take the lead.
Both players swapped service breaks in the second set before the challenger, attempting for his maiden professional title, seized the initiative to create a final set.
The opponent rescued four initial opportunities in a close third set before Medvedev broke to 15 to serve for the match.
Suitably, Medvedev secured the win with a shot at the net, with Moutet failing to handle a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
